personality; At first glance, Augustine looks quite unsettling. Maybe it's his unusual complexion or maybe his peculiar red eyes but Augustine looks quite inhuman for a dhampir. Ironically enough, Augustine takes after his mother in that regard. He's a rather imposing individual, someone who's quite well-learned and eloquent despite his peculiarities. Augustine is also a rather handsome man even though he almost never smiles. He looks like he's physically in his late thirties with fiery Titan-red hair and often dresses in red or black. Augustine possesses an old-world mystique about him thanks to his love for nineteenth century fashion and his dated use of language.

Augustine is a seemingly cold and apathetic individual who cares nothing for the bustling world that lies beyond his garden. He’s as stoic as they come, a world-weary dhampir who seems to prefer solitude above all things else. Yet despite his self-imposed exile, Augustine craves what all of us seek in life—a place to belong. His emotionless deadpan demeanor is merely his way of distancing himself from others, a defense mechanism. In his mind, it’s better to push others away rather than be pushed away. After being rejected so many times by others, Augustine was forced to seek comfort in solitude. While he would be the first to deny this, Augustine is a deeply hurt man with too many scars to count. He used to wear his heart on his sleeves but after facing such deep betrayal, he hides his kindness behind a stony mask of indifference. His icy exterior makes him quite an imposing figure but beneath all that ice lies warmth.

That warmth is sometimes limited at best but Augustine typically means well. Even so, he’s terribly haughty at times due to him hailing from the upper echelon of society. He prefers the finer things in life, often boasting about his rare collection of expensive and unusual artifacts. It’s very difficult for him to relate with others, especially those much younger than him. After all, he’s basically an old dhampir who’s been hidden away for ages. He’s not very knowledgeable regarding modern culture and it shows through his style of dress, his sometimes dated opinions, and even in his speech. Nevertheless, he does try to relate with others but the success varies.

As mentioned earlier, Augustine is tired. He became very disillusioned with life after the death of his entire family and grew even more bitter after enacting his revenge against those who harmed them. It’s because of this that Augustine is extremely slow to trust. While that bitterness he holds within his heart comes from a source of anger, it’s fear that stops him from trusting too easily. He honestly fears suffering such hardships again. All in all, Augustine is deeply depressed. Even though a century has passed since the Black Moon War, the bloody outcome has left a lingering effect on him. He’s scared of getting close to others again, scared of the thought of losing everything a second time. It isn’t until he meets Cassidy, a young trespassing artist who constantly sneaks into his garden, that he slowly learns to trust again. The weight of his loneliness is eventually eased by his friendship with Cass, giving Augustine the willpower to finally leave his garden. However, the loss of his family will never leave him even as he embarks upon this new chapter of his life.

As mentioned in his lore, Augustine crafted a beautiful garden for his dear mother once he learned the fundamentals of creation magic. In the bitter throes of grief and anguish, Augustine unleashed a horrifying onslaught of powerful sorcery upon the city itself. He used what he learned during his time with the Collective to decimate his foes, killing every single vampire within Hawthorne’s borders. The brutality of that dreadful day would be forever scorched within the pages of history known as the “Night of Blood”. Most vampires are capable of some form of shapeshifting but Augustine takes it to a whole new level. Not only can he shapeshift into various mythical beasts ranging from a three-headed chimera to a two-headed hydra, but he can also alter his appearance and transform into various people. It’s a rather taxing ability but something he does on occasion to avoid detection. However, Augustine cannot transform into people he hasn’t bitten. That means he cannot simply transform into just anyone on a dime. No, he would have to drink their blood to do so making this ability rather limited.

HEMOKINESIS

Augustine can recreate, shape, and manipulate blood in humans and other animals through various spells and rituals. He’s capable of draining the blood from others as well as using his own blood to forge weapons in battle. While the latter is used during desperate measures, Augustine can use the blood of others to create various armaments ranging from melee weapons like swords and spears to even firearms. The dhampir can also use the blood of others to control them like puppets to do his bidding. If he manages to scratch or bite his opponents, that leaves them open to his hemokinesis abilities. Augustine can also use this form of sorcery to heal wounds or recover limbs at will making him a very difficult opponent to defeat.

UMBRAMANCY

Augustine has a pact with the terrible archfiend known as Astaroth. This pact was forged in blood between himself and the archfiend, making it unbreakable even in death. Demons are typically unable to enter the mortal realm without a host. They need a summoner to bring them forth and Augustine does so by sharing his being with Astaroth but also by manifesting the demon’s likeness and limbs through summoning glyphs. As mentioned previously, he can also host Astaroth’s spirit within himself for a significant magical boost but it’s temporary at best.

Astaroth's abilities tend to manifest in the form of shadow manipulation. He can create any shape or figure using darkness and shadows. He also uses the darkness itself to shroud himself within a thick veil that leaves him utterly detected by mortal eyes. Augustine can also control the shadows of others, making them attack those he targets, making them a rather effective distraction method in combat. Augustine can also use the shadows to create and dispel shields in areas of total darkness using the absence of light to make these shadows more solid. He can also teleport for short distances using shadows.

FLIGHT

Sentimental item: Cass's sketchbook. This sketchbook was the bases of their unusual friendship, especially since Cassidy would often draw him as he tends to his garden. It also serves as a catalyst that begins their entwined tale, especially once others become aware of his presence in Hawthorne. It was thought that all the vampires died during the <>i>Blood Moon Massacre but Cassidy managed to catch his likeness well enough to prove everyone wrong. This sketchbook also serves a source of contention between them since Augustine wanted to keep his presence within the city hidden out of fear.

Gemstone: Red (primary), Silver (secondary) Augustine's gemstone is a ruby in the shape of a crescent moon with hints of silver dusting along the edges. The gem itself starts off a bright brilliant red in the center that eventually fades into a ghostly silver. It's quite polished and almost waxy in appearance but there's several little hairline cracks on the center.

Lost memory #1: The first lost memory will be anything hinting towards the Night of Blood. Augustine won't remember his role in this fateful night or remember anything that transpired afterwards. This will tie heavily in with his altered memory below.
Lost memory #2: His second lost memory would be anything relating to Cassidy. He won't remember who she is or how he met her, but he will still be in possession of the sketchbook she typically used for class. With only the initials, C.J etched into it--Augustine won't know who she is or why there's so many sketches of him inside this red sketchbook.

Altered memory: This is a bit cruel but Augustine is going to believe that the noble House of Rosethrawn still exists. He won't remember that his entire family was killed since he won't recall what happened during the massacre. If anything, he's going to believe they're alive and well, completely ignorant of what truly transpired.

However, his zeal for life was unprecedented and it truly showed through his love for gardening. Augustine is a natural-born horticulturist who enjoyed growing exotic flowers and plants. Since he could walk in daylight and possessed such a penchant for sorcery, he managed to create a lavish maze-like garden for his mother and father when he was just a child. His wondrous love for nature bled within his art. It even held within his studies since Augustine was also heavily interested in herbology and medicinal medicines.

When Augustine left home in pursuit of his continuing education with the Umbran Collective, a terrible war broke out in Hawthorne. The rival house of Dracul declared themselves as the sole sovereigns of Voletaria in a bold move to subjugate the other two vampiric houses, all hell broke loose. House Rosethrawn found themselves pinched between that of Dracul and the lesser known house of Darkwing. With Dracul leading the charge, all of Rosethrawn was destroyed in a savage onslaught that lasted only fourteen days. By the time Augustine returned on the fifteenth day, everyone he once knew was dead. In the bitter throes of grief and anguish, Augustine unleashed a horrifying onslaught of powerful sorcery upon the city itself. He used what he learned during his time with the Collective to decimate his foes, killing every single vampire within Hawthorne’s borders. The brutality of that dreadful day would be forever scorched within the pages of history known as the “Night of Blood”. Even with Darkwing enlisting the aid of werewolves to defend them, Augustine’s sorcery knew no equal. However, his quest for revenge soon left him feeling terribly hollow once thoughts of regret began to seep through. It was after his maddening crusade that Augustine sought seclusion within the remnants of his family’s manor. There he lingered in between the twilight of life and death for the next hundred years tending to his garden as humanity flourished forgetting the horrors of his kind. This self-imposed exile was his form of punishment for slaying his own kin. While he knew someday he would have to answer for his crimes, Augustine decided the best way to atone was to remain within the shadows of Hawthorne as time marched on.

That is until a pesky young artist by the name of Cassidy Jones dared to trespass into his garden but that’s a story for another time.

Abilities:

Hemokinesis(Blood Sorcery)
Augustine can recreate, shape, and manipulate blood in humans and other animals through various spells and rituals. He’s capable of draining the blood from others as well as using his own blood to forge weapons in battle. While the latter is used during desperate measures, Augustine can use the blood of others to create various armaments ranging from melee weapons like swords and spears to even firearms. The dhampir can also use the blood of others to control them like puppets to do his bidding. If he manages to scratch or bite his opponents, that leaves them open to his hemokinesis abilities. Augustine can also use this form of sorcery to heal wounds or recover limbs at will making him a very difficult opponent to defeat.

Demon Summoning & Shadow Manipulation
Unlike other demon summoners who typically summon demons of lesser hierarchy, Augustine has a pact with the terrible archfiend known as Astaroth. This pact was forged in blood between himself and the archfiend, making it unbreakable even in death. Demons are typically unable to enter the mortal realm without a host. They need a summoner to bring them forth and Augustine does so by sharing his being with Astaroth but also by manifesting the demon’s likeness and limbs through summoning glyphs. As mentioned previously, he can also host Astaroth’s spirit within himself for a significant magical boost but it’s temporary at best.
Astaroth's abilities tend to manifest in the form of shadow manipulation. He can create any shape or figure using darkness and shadows. He also uses the darkness itself to shroud himself within a thick veil that leaves him utterly detected by mortal eyes. Augustine can also control the shadows of others, making them attack those he targets, making them a rather effective distraction method in combat. Augustine can also use the shadows to create and dispel shields in areas of total darkness using the absence of light to make these shadows more solid. He can also teleport for short distances using shadows.

Courage
While Augustine would prefer to stay out of the sordid affairs of others, he honestly cannot and will not stand idle when someone else is in mortal jeopardy. The dhampir has a strong sense of morals that he will not forsake even if the odds are against him. Even though this could be rather problematic at times, Augustine will courageously throw himself into the line of fire to protect others. He has the persistence to always finish what he starts regardless of the consequences. Since the setting of this realm will be quite harrowing, Augustine is bound to end up fighting for those who cannot.

Wisdom
What Augustine lacks in general strengths, he makes up with his wisdom over both the magical arts and the political arena of Hawthorne. He pays attention to his surroundings and is very perspective of others. While he’s not infallible, Augustine is open-minded enough to learn from example and will examine a problem from all sides before hastily rushing to judgment. In a new environment like this, Augustine will do all he can to understand the ways of this world in hopes of putting this knowledge to good use. He’s quick to learn something new, especially at the cost of his survival.

Weaknesses:

Egotism
As one would expect from a long-lived supernatural being, Augustine suffers from the same hubris of his alleged betters. While growing up as a half-breed was a rather humbling experience, Augustine still carries himself with the same lofty pedigree as his vampiric compatriots. He views the everyday humdrum of mortal life to be rather dull and unrefined. He believes himself to be better than most because of his pedigree and sometimes acts quite snobby. Augustine is the type of man who enjoys the finer things in life, which will lead to him loathing his fate within this dismal setting. He’s also a little too self-assured of himself at times, almost to the point of blind egotism. In short, the dhampir can be utterly insufferable at times.

Indifference
Even though Augustine wouldn’t hesitate to assist anyone in peril, he carries a frigid aura of indifference with him wherever he goes. He’s aloof to the everyday struggles of the common man and utterly detached from society. Augustine is almost dispassionate, in a sense. The kind of person who seems to lack the niceties necessary to befriend others on his own. He became so disillusioned with life after the death of his clan, and even more better after seeing through with his revenge. It’s because of this that Augustine seems so distant towards others.

Fears:

Fear of Water
As explained in European folklore, water is seen as holy and pure. Running water is said to prevent the crossing of unholy beings such as vampires. While Augustine is only half-vampire at best, he’s quite fearful of large bodies of water because it’s said that water can unmake creatures like him. Additionally, he cannot swim which basically shows he manages this fear by not getting anywhere near water. This is probably his most irrational fear.

Death
It only makes sense that something that chases immortality would fear death. While Augustine knows that most living things must die, what happens when the undead finally meet their end? This is something he truly doesn’t want to find out. Even though he sometimes gets bored of the monotony of life, he fears death even more. Augustine has a healthy amount of respect for the Grim Reaper and would prefer to stay out of his reach for however long he may.

Desires:

Acceptance
While Augustine has grown used to solitude, he doesn’t enjoy being alone. He yearns for the comforts of family and friends but struggles to make them a reality. If he didn’t meet Cassidy, he would’ve remained within this musty old castle for the remainder of his days. However, Augustine–for better or for worse, is a bit too hesitant to try due to the trauma of losing his family. He really wants to be accepted by others but doubts he will ever be accepted because of what he is.
Regrets: The only regret Augustine has is not being there when his family needed him most. Even though there wasn’t much to be done once House Dracul put their insidious plot into action, Augustine still blames himself for allowing House Rosethrawn to fall in his absence. While there’s no telling if his presence during that dreadful night would’ve changed a thing, he still wishes he had been there to protect his clan in their final moments.

Tethers:

His Garden
Augustine’s love for nature and all things green is one of the few reasons why his personal garden serves as a tether that keeps him attached to his previous life. While the garden itself serves a dubious meaning within his heart, Augustine mostly views it in a positive light as a sanctuary away from the world around. However, this lovely garden is nothing more than a metaphorical cage that he locks himself within to keep others away. It also should be noted that Augustine has a strong affinity to roses, especially red roses since they were the symbol of his noble house.

A Sketchbook
While his love for nature is paramount, his love his for the arts takes center stage. He used to have an old leather-bound up sketchbook he used to use often in his younger years. Augustine looks upon this sketchbook with fondness, often referencing his old sketches whenever he wants to remember the happier days of his youth.

Blue Rose Pendant
This item here is a family heirloom passed down throughout the centuries. It belonged to the original progenitor of their clan and serves as proof of his allegiance with House Rosethrawn. The pendant itself is made out of lapis lazuli and carved in the shape of a small rose. This tether here symbolizes his sense of loyalty and duty to his fallen clan even though he's the last of his kind.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

At first glance, Augustine looks quite unsettling. Maybe it's his unusual complexion or maybe his peculiar red eyes but Augustine looks quite inhuman for a dhampir. Ironically enough, Augustine takes after his mother in that regard. He's a rather imposing individual, someone who's quite well-learned and eloquent despite his peculiarities. Augustine is also a rather handsome man even though he almost never smiles. He looks like he's physically in his late thirties with fiery Titan-red hair and often dresses in red or black. Augustine possesses an old-world mystique about him thanks to his love for nineteenth century fashion and his dated use of language.

PERSONALITY

TRAIT

Augustine is a seemingly cold and apathetic individual who cares nothing for the bustling world that lies beyond his garden. He’s as stoic as they come, a world-weary dhampir who seems to prefer solitude above all things else. Yet despite his self-imposed exile, Augustine craves what all of us seek in life—a place to belong. His emotionless deadpan demeanor is merely his way of distancing himself from others, a defense mechanism. In his mind, it’s better to push others away rather than be pushed away. After being rejected so many times by others, Augustine was forced to seek comfort in solitude. While he would be the first to deny this, Augustine is a deeply hurt man with too many scars to count. He used to wear his heart on his sleeves but after facing such deep betrayal, he hides his kindness behind a stony mask of indifference. His icy exterior makes him quite an imposing figure but beneath all that ice lies warmth.

That warmth is sometimes limited at best but Augustine typically means well. Even so, he’s terribly haughty at times due to him hailing from the upper echelon of society. He prefers the finer things in life, often boasting about his rare collection of expensive and unusual artifacts. It’s very difficult for him to relate with others, especially those much younger than him. After all, he’s basically an old dhampir who’s been hidden away for ages. He’s not very knowledgeable regarding modern culture and it shows through his style of dress, his sometimes dated opinions, and even in his speech. Nevertheless, he does try to relate with others but the success varies.

As mentioned earlier, Augustine is tired. He became very disillusioned with life after the death of his entire family and grew even more bitter after enacting his revenge against those who harmed them. It’s because of this that Augustine is extremely slow to trust. While that bitterness he holds within his heart comes from a source of anger, it’s fear that stops him from trusting too easily. He honestly fears suffering such hardships again. All in all, Augustine is deeply depressed. Even though a century has passed since the Black Moon War, the bloody outcome has left a lingering effect on him. He’s scared of getting close to others again, scared of the thought of losing everything a second time. It isn’t until he meets Cassidy, a young trespassing artist who constantly sneaks into his garden, that he slowly learns to trust again. The weight of his loneliness is eventually eased by his friendship with Cass, giving Augustine the willpower to finally leave his garden. However, the loss of his family will never leave him even as he embarks upon this new chapter of his life.

If there’s one thing that Augustine is very passionate about, it’s gardening. As mentioned in his lore, Augustine crafted a beautiful garden for his dear mother once he learned the fundamentals of creation magic. His zeal for life was unprecedented back then and he yearned to show his mother the beauty of life outside of the shadows. His love for nature is something quite uncommon for his kind. He’s also quite artistic in his own right. Augustine’s father was a painter after all, a court artist. Much of what he knows about art stems from his father. BACKSTORY

Augustine is the offspring of an unusual bond between human and vampire, a dhampir tasked with guarding the ancient Voletarian city of Hawthorne. He is a survivor of the Black Moon War that took place over a century ago, and a loyal son of House Rosethrawn. While a mere dhampir cannot hope to become as powerful as their vampiric brothers, Augustine makes up for his faults by being an avid practitioner of the occult. He is the son of Lady Satine Athanasia Rosethrawn, the former matriarch of House Rosethrawn, and a famous human artist by the name of Alaric Black. He grew up within the royal vampiric courts under the watchful gaze of House Rosethrawn but also spent ample time with his father to understand the basic foundations of art. While he was a fairly skilled artist, Augustine’s love for people set him apart from his peers. Unlike other vampires who simply viewed humanity as livestock, he saw people as much more than food. That is because of his unique lineage and his strong ties to his father. His love for humanity often caused him many headaches but he was perhaps the only creature of the night to treat them as equals.

Nevertheless, Augustine was viewed with both fondness and scorn by humans and vampires alike, some claiming that the young dhampir was nothing more than an abomination born from Lady Satine’s unquenchable lust. It’s deemed as “taboo” for vampires to take a human lover, especially since humans were viewed as nothing more than cattle. However, Augustine’s gifted talent for sorcery certainly helped skew such dissenting views in his favor as time marched on. He’s one of the few sorcerers within his clan to master the dark arts, and is the only vampire to have attended the Umbran Collective, a college of dark mages who specialize in both creation magic and transmogrification. It’s also because of his unique heritage, Augustine is one of the few members of House Rosethrawn who can walk in daylight making him a rather useful asset for his vampiric brethren. This allowed Augustine to easily infiltrate human society without much fuss but not without the aid of a glamor.
